Senior Accountant - Corporate & Project Accounting Focus

Ledgent is supporting a respected construction organization in Rancho Cordova in the search for a Senior Accountant who brings both strong general accounting expertise and hands-on project accounting capabilities. This position plays a critical role in financial accuracy, project cost integrity, reporting compliance, and continuous process improvement. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys balancing both corporate accounting and job-costing responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting Functions
- Oversee monthly bank reconciliations across multiple entities with meticulous attention to detail.
- Prepare and review journal entries for monthly, quarterly, and year-end close cycles.
- Review and approve Staff Accountant entries to ensure compliance and data integrity.
- Prepare consolidated financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flows) in alignment with GAAP.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts and supporting schedules, ensuring proper classification and accuracy.
- Assist with external audits by collecting documentation, responding to requests, and supporting auditors throughout the process.
- Record complex transactions related to real estate acquisitions, dispositions, reconfigurations, and other entity-level structural changes using proper GAAP treatment.
- Prepare quarterly lender reporting, including covenant analysis and variance commentary.
- Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes and internal workflows.
- Support ad hoc initiatives and special projects as needed.
Project Accounting & Job Costing Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate job cost records, ensuring all project costs-including labor, materials, subcontractor invoices, and overhead-are recorded and classified correctly.
- Monitor project budgets and actuals, working closely with project managers to review cost coding, identify discrepancies, and ensure alignment with project financial goals.
- Prepare detailed monthly job cost reports, providing insights into cost performance and identifying cost trends or irregularities.
- Perform variance analysis to compare forecasted vs. actual project costs, investigating root causes and communicating findings to operations leadership.
- Support the preparation of work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, including revenue recognition, cost-to-complete analysis, and gross margin projections.
- Ensure contract terms, change orders, and billing schedules are reflected accurately in the accounting system.
- Assist with project close-out financial review, ensuring all commitments, accruals, and cost adjustments are properly captured.
Additional Responsibilities
- Create and maintain documented accounting procedures, policies, and workflow updates.
- Research relevant GAAP requirements to ensure proper treatment of transactions and financial reporting.
- Participate in cross-training and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the accounting team.
- Engage in continuing education relevant to both corporate and project accounting.
- Mentor Staff Accountants and support their professional development.
- Contribute to enhancements in internal controls and make recommendations for improvements where appropriate.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 5+ years of professional accounting experience, preferably including construction or project accounting exposure.
- CPA appreciated.
- Advanced Excel skills; experience with Yardi, Spectrum, or construction accounting software is advantageous.
- Solid understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and accounting best practices.
